Ms. Mayhem – Freelance Journalist

Ms. Mayhem is a new, local Denver publication that strives to deliver hard-hitting news as well as the incredible stories of marginalized voices. As a new publication, we are looking for up-and-coming writers that are eager to have an outlet to share the stories they truly want to cover. This is a contract role, pay is per word and DOE.

We are looking for an inquisitive, determined, and focused journalist to join our team. As a reporter for our publication, you will conduct research, interview sources, and write engaging stories to inform, captivate, and grow our audience. Our ideal candidate is a proactive go-getter, clear communicator, and dedicated to producing unbiased, top-notch journalism.

Freelance Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily responsibilities include receiving assignments for stories, evaluating leads and pitching compelling story ideas to editors, revising and editing work for editorial approval, and collaborating with other reporters, editors, and production staff
  • Gather information for newsworthy stories through observation, interviews, investigation, and research
  • Travel to various locations to find current, relevant details about newsworthy events in real-time and after the fact
  • Take photographs, video, or audio recordings to document events and facts
  • Write and report stories and updates for use online and in print, radio, and television according to the prescribed style guides

Freelance Requirements and Qualifications

  • Pursuing or achieved a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, English, or related field OR 1 year of experience writing for a publication
  • A portfolio of 5-10 stories you can share with us
  • Able to maintain an ethical, honest, and objective standard in reporting
  • Adaptable and able to build rapport with a diverse array of people
  • Disciplined with strong time management skills; able to work to deadlines
  • Superb research and writing skills
  • Creative and inquiring mind
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of communications media and telecommunications technology
  • Understanding of shield laws, local ordinances, and legal precedents regarding journalism and the rights of reporters

Ms. Mayhem – Freelance Photographer or Videographer

As a new publication, we are looking for up-and-coming photographers and videographers that are eager to have an outlet to share the stories they truly want to cover. This is a contract role, pay is per image (photo) or hourly (video) and DOE.

We are looking for inquisitive, determined, and focused photographers and videographers to join our team. As a photographer for our publication, you will research subjects, take portraits and candids, and write captions for each submitted photo. As a videographer, you will research subjects, conduct interviews, and edit videos. Our ideal candidate is a proactive go-getter, clear communicator, and dedicated to producing unbiased, top-notch journalism.

Ms. Mayhem is a new, local Denver publication that strives to deliver hard-hitting news as well as the incredible stories of marginalized voices. As a new publication, we are looking for up-and-coming copy editors that are eager to have an outlet to share the stories they truly want to cover. This is a contract role, pay is hourly and DOE.

We are looking for meticulous and knowledgeable copy editors to join our team. As an editor for our publication, you will proofread stories, photo captions and video text, verify factual correctness of information, and ensure adherence to AP and Ms. Mayhem’s style. Our ideal candidate is a proactive go-getter, clear communicator, and dedicated to producing unbiased, top-notch journalism.

Freelance Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily responsibilities include receiving drafts of stories from writers via Google Docs and communicating with other editors 
  • Proofreading stories and correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation errors
  • Verifying factual correctness of information, including statistics, dates, names, and hyperlinks
  • Checking text for readability and adherence to AP and Ms. Mayhem’s style guidelines
  • Rewriting stories to improve clarity and concision, including adding additional information if necessary
